Raise a tennis packet for Hilly Fields

Patrick Bishop writes:

I’m a Hilly fields local, and work for JustGiving, who you have probably heard of – we’re an online fundraising platform.

I’m also a keen tennis player and regularly use the great free courts that we have on Hilly Fields.  Anyone who plays on them, but if so, you’ll know that whilst the courts are great, the nets themselves are terrible and are completely broken and holey:

Unfortunately, the council haven’t got round to replacing the nets in years, so I’m looking to see whether as a community we can raise just over £200 to buy and install three new tennis nets!!  I’ve just set up a project page on JustGiving to do this and I’d be very grateful for any help.

It’s worth saying that JustGiving Projects is a new tool that we’re launching  to help people raise money for local community projects that they really care about (rather than just charities, which is our bread and butter).  Given that the tennis court nets were something that I really wanted to get fixed myself, I thought I would set up a page myself and give it a go.

It’s worth pointing out that people just pledge to support a project, so unless the project gets fully funded, then you don’t donate anything!

Brilliant! I've contributed. Thanks, Patrick - hope you raise enough.

In the meantime can they be repaired/hand-sewn back together?

Always wondered about the courts on Hilly Fields (and Ladywell Fields and Telegraph Hill). Is there a booking process or is it a case of turn up and hope there's a free court?

t's a case of turn up and hope/wait.

Good luck Patrick! And as another JG staffer (and Crofton Park resident), would love to hear some feedback on the site.

Have you asked Glendale about this? They have been applying for money to refurbish tennis courts in Lewisham - maybe Hilly Fields is one of them?

ah interesting! thanks for the tip. I'll get in touch

I saw your pledge come through - and many others today! Thanks so much. Hopefully we'll be able to fully fund the project and finally get some new nets :-)

On Telegraph Hill at least it is turn up and wait - and there is a sort of unspoken agreement (and a polite request to this effect on the notice) that you don't continue playing too long if there are people waiting.
All much more friendly and relaxed than a booking process.
I expect it is the same on the others - booking systems require staff, this is self-regulating.

Bryan & Keegan estate agents have pledged £40, hope your able to reach your target! I can see the headlines, Wimbledon champ practiced their ground strokes on Hilly Fields.....

Three things - (1) it's the Council - or Glendale, their grounds contractor - who should repair the nets and its a nonsense if they say they can't find £200ish for this. I urge all to write to Martin.Hyde@lewisham.gov.uk, Parks Manager, about this; but (2) well done to all those willing to dip into their own pocket - it's good to see that so many have pride in their area. (3) I've long urged the Council to implement a booking system so that (a) they can raise some money to maintain the courts; and (b) one can turn up and play at a booked time. An online booking system, with simple 'receipt' as evidence, for this could easily be implemented.

There used to be a man in a little hut that you could buy a ticket from. That was a long time ago though.

Is there a communtiy of people nearby to Hilly Fields who play tennis there? I've recently moved to the area and used to play quite a bit but have let it go a little bit over the past few years.
I'm looking to get playing again and would love to play locals around Hilly Fields.
If people show interest I'm happy to arrange some matches/league, who knows even a tournament!

You can pre-book a court. A few years back lots of the courts were booked up and it went down very badly. At the time it was £4.50 an hour. Last I heard, you needed to contact Glendale pay your money and they print off a notice that get put on the court to say it is booked for whatever day and time.
