Through a Bus Darkly
Thought you might like a look at old grocers on the corner of Tyrwhitt Road [now being refurbished as a small retail unit after the Council intervened to force this building's refurbishment]... Apologies for the quality of the pic... Had to take it quickly with my phone camera on the top of the bus before it pulled away from the bus stop.

I always thought it would make for a lovely coffee shop...
It looks like a lovely shop. I really hope it doesn't get spoiled with some gaudy plastic tasteless signage.

As far as I understand it (not very far), the shop has Class A1 planning consent. This appears to include: shops, retail warehouses, hairdressers, undertakers, travel and ticket agencies, post offices, dry cleaners, pet shops, sandwich bars, showrooms, domestic hire shops, funeral directors and internet cafes.
It doesn't allow: Financial services such as banks and building societies, professional services (other than health and medical services) including estate and employment agencies and betting offices (all class A2) or "the sale of food and drink for consumption on the premises - restaurants, snack bars and cafes" (all class A3) or "Public house, wine-bar or other drinking establishment" (class A4) or "Hot food takeaways" (class A5).
So no lawyers, accountants or coffee shops, I guess....
I've been reliably informed that the unit is going to be a deli/coffee shop, although the post before mine seems to challenge what I've been told...
I suppose it boils down to what the difference is between "snack bars and cafes" and "sandwich shop" in the eyes of the planners.
It looks incredible. The buildings around here are beautiful - especially after a refresh!
I think you take food away from 'sandwich bars' and don't eat on the premises, whereas you do in 'snack bars and cafes'.
Does anyone know what happening to the premises on the corner of Hazeldon Road? There are builders working inside the shop (The one hit by a car).
on a related note, who was the dude who smashed his white minivan up and left it right up against the kerb on childeric road by sanford street?

Not much competition for that around there. Except, on market day, of course.
A sandwich bar could be very successful as the Tressillian building of Lewisham College now has no canteen. The vending machines rarely work either and drinking water for staff has also been withdrawn. Mind you,staff have only 30 minutes lunch breaks and are expected in the classroon 10 mins before class.
Oooo would love a coffee shop there. There's nowhere nice/ close for a quick cuppa after the school run

glad the council have ensure dtha tthe conservation regs are kept ot in this restore - now to get them to enforce at Villa Toscana
Looks good! Now when are the Council going to step in and force network rail to do something with the "toes ask" building which had lain derelict for years and years....?

Toes ask? It's a local institution, you're not from round here are you? It's near the station on brockley rd, near the railway budge

So, what's wrong with the Villa Toscana frontage? Looks ok to me.
The old La Lanterna frontage was much nicer.
@ anon 10.32 - No its clearly unfinished & needs a lot more work put in to it.
@ anon 16.04 - You can be serious? The old frontage was an eye sore! Peeling yellow, red & black paint with dead flys in the window is not my cup of tea!
Toes Ask? Was'nt that ever a 2nd hand furniture shop?
La Lanterna was a pretty good and an attractive frontage in its heigh day.
Sadly it was left to decline by disinterested owners.
I guess it is best not to pre-judge Villa Tosca, presumably it is still work in progress?
Maybe there will be a grand opening when it is finished.
As for that Ask Toes place, it would be nice to see such derelict premises brought back into use.
Ask toes wasn't a furniture shop, that was next to the barbers, the old entrance to the upper level brockley lane train station
