Joan Ruddock from CND to DBE
Brockley Central has already been flooded by forelock-tugging proles, offering their congratulations to Joan Ruddock, MP for Lewisham Deptford, who has been made a Dame in the New Year's Honours List.
The former CND activist is now, formally, Dame Joan Ruddock, DBE, MP.
Also honoured were Lewisham's Raymond Warburton (OBE), Senior Team Leader for the NHS Equality Team and Jean Gross (OBE), England's Communication Champion for Children, whose office was shut down today. Catford's Pauline Nandoo received an MBE for her work for the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers.

Well done Joan. If you need any tips on appropriate etiquette don't hesitate to ask.
You'll be on the list next year Nick, happy new year! :)
Hope now she has achieved her Dame status, she can chill out and actually respond to some emails...
I am sure she will, but just remember she should be addressed:
"The Hon. Dame Joan Ruddock DBE MP"
Oooops. I meant:
"The Right Hon. Dame Joan Ruddock DBE MP"
Memo to self: buy some very long envelopes.
Best wishes to Nick and all readers and have a HNY.
Joan -
Will your new Damely status make it possible for you to improve law enforcement here?
I hope so.
The police don't answer to the local mp, nor are there priorities set by them. Makes a satisfying editorial in a paper I s'pose.
Meaningless way of making public servants hang around. Nobody who matters cares a stuff who is a dame, and never has!
It was quite amusing reading through the list (which looked as if it was typed on a golf-ball typewriter) and seeing various movers and shakers or public spirited ordinary people being nominated for "services to" this and that, while the civil servants just had their role and the department they worked in - no services to anything at all.
Do Dames sit in the House of Lords? Does this mean a byelection for Lewisham Deptford?
98% certain they don't - you need to be a Baroness for that. Isn't it the equivalent of a "Sir"?
It would be quite useful for the coalition if they could force byelections at will by using the honours list.
Shouldn't it be EITHER Dame Joan Ruddock OR Joan Ruddock DBE?
Otherwise aren't we being Tautological?
Won't Lewisham Deptford disappear at the next election?
Quite right TM.
Tautological, like Lord Haw Haw
