South East London tradespeople recommendations

Builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, roofers, and so on - which tradesmen entrance you? Use this thread to recommend local suppliers to other Brockley readers - positive reviews only please. Brockley Central does not endorse any of the providers mentioned on this thread.

Please don't use this thread to discuss locals shops, cafes, etc. There are countless other places on Brockley Central where you can do that.

Recommendation for Laminate Flooring/Carpenter for wardrobes - Joe Hickey

I have recently had the pleasure of seeing the workmanship of Joe Hickey who has recently completed two jobs at my place in Brockley.

Job 1 - Fitted Wardrobes in bedroom.

Joe did an initial consultation so he could understand the type of wardrobes I would be interested in and measured the spaces accordingly. Over the course of the next few days he built two wardrobes within the alcoves which now have transformed the bedroom. I will post some photos of the job shortly. They are better than I had expected and now mean I have no need for bulky furniture in what is a cosy space.

Job 2 - Removal of existing old laminate flooring and replaced with new krono laminate flooring.

Joe was chosen for this job after meeting several contractors for the job based on his honest assessment of the flooring options that I could use (renovate floorboards/wooden flooring vs new laminate). He was the one person who I felt most comfortable with on taking on this job with little fuss and ten days later I now have a really professional looking new floor that is expertly cut to all the kinks of a victorian ground floor flat. Again, will post photos shortly.

Joe comes highly recommended by me based on the quality of his workmanship.

His number is 07557 949 929 and would be happy to provide a reference.

Recommendation for painter/decorator - Colm MacCormac

Job 1 - Removal of wall paper and painting of whole flat

A few weeks ago I had Colm & Mario remove some very old wall paper as well as complete a paint job of all walls and some ceilings within my flat.

They completed the job well and Colm was open to completing any snag items that were missed off or that I personally added during the job.

Other smaller jobs
- Colm also helped to bring in an electrician to install an extractor fan in my bathroom
- His colleague Mario is now spray washing my decking and helping remove some weeds

Colms number is 07535711360. Happy to provide a reference if needed.

Definitely recommend Niko the plumber - he sorted out a total bodge job by another plumber and it was cheap and easy. He called back to check it was all ok a week later. Very nice guy too 07818 607583

Joe Hickey just installed built-in alcove wardrobes in our master bedroom. To say he's an incredible carpenter is an understatement. He is a true craftsman who takes his work very seriously.

My design was slightly more complicated than most built-ins: a lower drawer and mirrored doors with shaker detailing that matched our platform bed all in a very wonky shaped alcove x2. And mid-way through the process, I asked for a hidden pull out shelf that doubles as a night stand. Rather than getting annoyed or charging more, Joe was excited by the challenge and created something truly special.

Not only is the design exactly what I asked for (if not better), but the quality is impeccable. Joe never cut corners or took the easy way out - even when he would be the only one to notice.

On top of all that, Joe was a pleasure to have around the house. I work from home and so I was around most of the week. Joe keeps a very neat job site - he even picked up after me when I started stripping wallpaper. Even my dog is smitten with him!

We are already planning on having Joe build us a utility 'room' under our stairs the next time he's free! I will post pictures of the wardrobes shortly.

Really recommend Gary Sargeant for plumbing work. Very nice guy who works hard for a fair price. He came out initially for free then rearranged his schedule to accommodate what became an emergency situation. He identified the problem quickly, dealt with it and left the place looking much cleaner and tidier than when he started. He's also very responsive and available at / via gksargeant@gmail.com.

Recommendation for Electrician - Graham Hayes 07771993939

Graham comes highly recommended and complete a number of jobs for me as follows:

1. Installed a bathroom fan to remove condensation
2. Performed a Electrical Survey of complete flat
3. Based on his recommendations of the survey, got him to rectify wiring in whole flat and fix a number of areas such as garden lighting, bathroom lighting and living room rose replacement.

He was very flexible with being able to complete jobs in the time specified, was very professional in his diagnosis and gave me options in what could be replaced at different price points based on my budget. I would recommend him for any electrical job that you might have in your house.

Thanks

Plumber: Gary Sargeant 07801 474514 (also recommended below) just fitted an outside garden tap for us. He came, he did it, it works, he was charming and it didn't cost as much as I expected. All good.

Hello, in a bid to undo the 'modernisation' of my Victorian terrace I'm in need of a few recommendations. If anyone can recommend me trades people to paint pebbledash, fit new front door and a window company that does nice double glazed pvc sash windows (we are not conservation and anything is better than what we have!). Any help much appreciated!

anon said...

Why not get the pebbledash removed?

Don't use sash pro they were a nightmare and never finished the job. I work for the Victorian Society and have nearly finished restoring my ruined Victorian terrace so would be very happy to have a chat if you like.

JosephJohnODonnell said...

How much did it cost if you don't mind me asking.

JosephJohnODonnell said...

I got a new fireplace from bluemantle from old kent roaad. I didnt have them fit mine but wish I did as my builder did a bit of a bodge. The fires places are lovely handcarved marble and look great for a very reasonable price.

Recommended, Plumber: Gary Sargeant 07801 474514 / gksargeant@gmail.com. We turned to Gary in desperation after being let down for the third time in a row by the plumber whom we had originally used for our loft conversion and after our neighbour (Chris below) had successfully used his services. It was such a relief to find someone who is polite, reliable and who obviously knows what he is doing. Gary worked very hard, and carried out the job in an efficient manner, leaving the bathroom clean and tidy. The box work surrounding the waste pipe had to be unexpecteldy removed and remedial work carried out but this was done with minimal fuss or disruption and the area was left neat and in a state ready for it to be boxed in and decorated. We would be happy to use Gary again.

Gary the plumber 07742 681 461. I rang early afternoon and Gary popped in that evening to have a look at a leak under the kitchen sink. He was a very nice man and did a great job for a very reasonable price. Will definitely use him again for any other plumbing work.

Can you give me an idea of the total coat of the wardrobes and do you know if he can do sliding wardrobes

SMD said...

They were £1,700 of that £300 of that was the mirrors. I had 3 other carpenters give me quotes and Joe's was the second least expensive (prices ranged from £1,500 to £2,100). Joe made everything to measure at our house and was here for 6 or 7 days.

I didn't ask about sliding doors, but I imagine he can do it.

Honestly, I am really impressed with Joe's work and would trust him to do anything around our house. Hope that helps!!

I can highly recommend Nick Cremer the tree surgeon. He cut down an ugly gangly tree in our front garden. It wasn't a big job but since we're in the conservation area we had to get some sort of permission. Nick dealt with the council for us and chopped down the tree quickly and neatly.

We've just had soundproofing and decorating work on our sitting room and would heartily recommend Eddie Celaj (07791 076062 eddiethebuilder1982@yahoo.co.uk) who worked extremely hard and not only did the job to budget and very well, but was also a delight to get to know. Hi daily rate was reasonable, but bearing in mind the quality of the work he produced he could charge considerably more. Have used a number of other builders and tradesmen this last few years but Eddie was outstanding.

Does anyone have a recommendation for local fencing companies? A panel has blown down in our back garden. It's not a big job so I'm having trouble getting suppliers interested in fixing it. All thoughts welcome!

@helenDavehome said...

Not sure if this counts as a tradesman question but we are looking to buy a bike storage shed for our front garden and it seems we have quite specific requirements, i.e. we can't find off the shelf solution. We'd prefer a metal rather than wooden shed for security, it needs to hold 4 bikes in a way that we don't have to take 2 or 3 out to get the one we need each time (it will be used by 2 different flats). Any suggestions for where I should look, what I could google, who I could approach? Thank you.
